A group of 8 set off from Luton Airport on Weds. 14th May to meet up with Trevor Oliver who was already in Romania. A safe journey was had, the only problem being a mistake by our driver in Romania, he put 23 litres of petrol in before realising it was a diesel bus!!!
After 6 hours we arrived at Dunavat in the south eastern corner of Romania. The last several miles from Tulcea being on farm tracks; the tarmac road has not yet reached this area.
We were welcomed warmly by Nic & Elizabeth to Raza-Soarelui Sunlight Camp. Our first banquet of the week ensued.
There was lots of work to do, but Trevor who had arrived some days before had gathered all of the materials so on Thursday morning we could get straight on. Our first tasks involved taking out an old communal sink to replace with modern sinks, complete with drainage and plumbing; preparing the main fence for painting, putting up guttering on the activity centre and getting various electrical devices and connections working. The 8 men and one woman team soon got stuck in and much was achieved.
Over the next several days we saw an amazing amount of work achieved and consumed an amazing amount of food, the weather was really great, daytime temperatures 25 degrees+.
It was great to be part of a hard working team and at the end of our time both Nic and Elizabeth were really grateful for all that had been achieved.
One of the most important thing is for them to know that someone cares.
